Homework that i did

three products that demonstrate the impact that new and digital media has had on the film industry

1

advances in the technology used in consumer TV's such as blue ray and 3d

films have to be filmed in higher quality else HD tv's would be pointless although the camera's used to film tv where better quality then it was shown on old tv's because of the low resolution screens

also 3d being made domestic means more programmes and dvd's have to be released in 3d to make the tv worth having

and because of blue ray being released the camera's used had to up quality even more

2

because of home cinema systems and film streaming websites like netflix there is less point in going to the cinema to watch a film because the 'cinema experience' can be replicated in your own home and allot of inconveniences are abolished, like not being able to pause if yon need the toilet and the person with a cold sat behind you.

and because of 'smart tv's' it's easier to sync your tv with netflix or itunes

3

3d has to be shot a certain way, it has never looked as good as it does now because the lenses on the cameras are too big to put close enough together, so a mirroring system has to be used explained in the video below

these are the cameras used

http://www.red.com/products/epic

48 of them where used just for the 3d scenes in 'the hobbit', the main body shown in the image below without any lenses, microphone..... would cost around £16000 each

this is because of their ability to film in 5K which is more than 4 times bigger then 1080p at 48fps which is an amazing resolution aswell as it's low weight and small size making them very versatile

I DID HOMEWORK

How are Gypsies represented in this scene?

the moist mise en scene used during the opening of the scene to show the slightly camp gipsy camp site from tommy and gorgeous georges point of view represents the gypsies as being messy dirty people, it shows a dull area where caravans and vehicles are stood, the large mitsubishi car and vans that seem to be owned by the gypsies look stolen as they where not very old cars when the film was made in 2000, the child skidding his bike upto the car door shows that they dont care about other peoples posessions as the car could easily of been hit and streight away the gypsie childs voice which is fast and hard to understand shows them as being uneducated, this is followed by his use of the term 'who are you to conform', which i dont know what he meant by that, probably a way of distracting who theyre talking to by confusing them, they also represent the gypsies as money grabbing when he tries to demand £5 for taking tommy to mickey as the other children huddle closely arround the car.

you then see mickey's face pop up from behind the car, he is wearing a leather hat, a big coat and has a few days of stubble, this can be a common representation for the gypsies at the time although it can be percieved as a slightly farmer look, a practical type of clothing that can be gotten dirty without much care although the hat would have been differant, you then find out when he does up his belt that de was actually squalling behind the car and using it as a toilet, this represents them as dirty people, he also seems quite hyper active with his movements and acting like a child, this makes him come off as a week childish person which makes gorgeous george not see him as a threat which is contradicted heavily in the following scene

his mother then comes out of the caravan to greet them, she is quick to tell them that there is no murdering or stealing done by the gypsies although that most likely is not the case, she is actually represented as a nice caring person and is shown asif she spends most of her time in the caravan and looking after the children as she seems to be one of the only females on the camp site so it may represent the gypsy women as being quite naieve of the actions of the male gypsies, also her use of 'don't be silly mickey, offer the man a propper drink" after mickey offers gorgeous a cup of tea implying she was offering him something alcohol based, this represents the gypsies as dirty, uneducated, money grabbing, rowdy acloholics in summary

Do you believe that the Media creates unfair representations of certain minority groups?

films such as snatch and tv programmes such as 'my big fat gypsy wedding' represent the gypsie races harshly but by most peoples recognition of gypsies it's actually quite fare, these films an programmes perfectly represent them although the women are represented as being alot less rowdy then the men and having much better morrals then the men although it represents both males and females as being highly religious as mickey always wears a cross around his kneck even when he is fighting and an my big fat gypsie wedding all of them have conventional church weddings and they seem to regularly go to church as respectful people

other subcultures are represented by the media in a fair light too, goths and gay people as by my reakoning it seems to represent them about right in tv programmes such as skins and towie, however it does give allot of stick to foreigners and polish people, although the representations are right for some or maby most of them there is a good side to them.

Advances in the way people see new films such as the sudden appearance of blue ray and 3d to the cinema and even in the home now pose a challenge towards traditional media institutions such as Disney and warner brothers, these film making institutions now have to conform to the modern way films are made to stay in business, as well as upping their equipment to film in higher definition and blue ray they also have to get equipment and editors to make the clips work in 3D they also have to make films that attract different or a wider array of audiences, this is probably why Disney and warner brothers who would usually make children’s films, especially Disney in this case had to make films such as pirates of the Caribbean and wet potter, these films are rated as un suitable for young children as you could see by watching them usually by their sometimes quite scary nature especially with characters such as Voldemort and the wear wolf in wet potter and the living cursed pirate skeletons in the original pirates of the Caribbean, some institutions have obviously tried to modernise the storylines of existing series of films but have found that they’re making a step in the wrong direction, this works well with the James bond films as some key codes of the films where dropped such as Q and money penny in ‘casino royale’ and ‘quantum of solace’, these changes must have upset the massive existing audience of the series somewhat that they bought these codes back in the latest James bond film ‘skyfall’.
blue ray/ 3d
disnep made pirates of the carribean ?
james bond ditching older story lines then getting them back
high defenition
old films where more for older and younger people now there is more of a midpoint
humor has changed, british slapstick to brash rudeness, idiocy to stupidity
effects are more complicated, everything is bigger
sound effects are louder, like punches
change in sound effects to create atmosphere clunky old sound effects to heavy breathing and wind sounds
more complicated plots and storylines to keep people interested in buying the dvd after it's been seen in the cinema
more use of macro and artistic shots in films showing city scapes and small fast shots to change atmosphere between scenes... like in ?... no country for old men, horror movies
New and digital media erodes the dividing line between reporters and reported, between active producers and passive audiences: people are enabled to speak for themselves.

Have such developments made the media more democratic, with more equal participation by more people?

although the main way news is broadcasted to people is usually from larger institutions made up of propper reporters and news channels such as bbc news which is on tv every few hours allot of news is found out directly from people posting videos on youtube and information being posted and retweeted on twitter which can have a less biased view on the news then most news channels depending on the person who made the video or posted it on twitter, this means that information can be seen from all sides of the story from people in differant countries and seperate origins, therefore we do get a more democratic view on the media

but this can vary between differant age groups, older people will probably only watch the news broadcasted on tv, listen to the radio and read news papers that are probably from the same institution while younger people can be on twitter, facebook, they may watch the news on tv so they will get the wider more democratic view of the media and probably learn the differances between the way news is delivered by bigger institutions subliminally.

i think that the problem with more people participating in delivering digital media to other people is that allot of important information can be missed that larger institutions will not miss such as lead up's to events and the reasoning behind what has been done
