I DID HOMEWORK

How are Gypsies represented in this scene?

the moist mise en scene used during the opening of the scene to show the slightly camp gipsy camp site from tommy and gorgeous georges point of view represents the gypsies as being messy dirty people, it shows a dull area where caravans and vehicles are stood, the large mitsubishi car and vans that seem to be owned by the gypsies look stolen as they where not very old cars when the film was made in 2000, the child skidding his bike upto the car door shows that they dont care about other peoples posessions as the car could easily of been hit and streight away the gypsie childs voice which is fast and hard to understand shows them as being uneducated, this is followed by his use of the term 'who are you to conform', which i dont know what he meant by that, probably a way of distracting who theyre talking to by confusing them, they also represent the gypsies as money grabbing when he tries to demand £5 for taking tommy to mickey as the other children huddle closely arround the car.

you then see mickey's face pop up from behind the car, he is wearing a leather hat, a big coat and has a few days of stubble, this can be a common representation for the gypsies at the time although it can be percieved as a slightly farmer look, a practical type of clothing that can be gotten dirty without much care although the hat would have been differant, you then find out when he does up his belt that de was actually squalling behind the car and using it as a toilet, this represents them as dirty people, he also seems quite hyper active with his movements and acting like a child, this makes him come off as a week childish person which makes gorgeous george not see him as a threat which is contradicted heavily in the following scene

his mother then comes out of the caravan to greet them, she is quick to tell them that there is no murdering or stealing done by the gypsies although that most likely is not the case, she is actually represented as a nice caring person and is shown asif she spends most of her time in the caravan and looking after the children as she seems to be one of the only females on the camp site so it may represent the gypsy women as being quite naieve of the actions of the male gypsies, also her use of 'don't be silly mickey, offer the man a propper drink" after mickey offers gorgeous a cup of tea implying she was offering him something alcohol based, this represents the gypsies as dirty, uneducated, money grabbing, rowdy acloholics in summary

Do you believe that the Media creates unfair representations of certain minority groups?

films such as snatch and tv programmes such as 'my big fat gypsy wedding' represent the gypsie races harshly but by most peoples recognition of gypsies it's actually quite fare, these films an programmes perfectly represent them although the women are represented as being alot less rowdy then the men and having much better morrals then the men although it represents both males and females as being highly religious as mickey always wears a cross around his kneck even when he is fighting and an my big fat gypsie wedding all of them have conventional church weddings and they seem to regularly go to church as respectful people

other subcultures are represented by the media in a fair light too, goths and gay people as by my reakoning it seems to represent them about right in tv programmes such as skins and towie, however it does give allot of stick to foreigners and polish people, although the representations are right for some or maby most of them there is a good side to them.

  1. Some clear focus on the text and you do get your point across and know what you want to say. However, there is a lack of analysis here. Read over the article about Snatch and look at what they say about the trailer. You need to be integrating Media terminology as well as analysing at the same time, and at the moment you're missing out on doing this.
